Magnetic-Particle Inspection (MT)

Reveal surface and near-surface discontinuities on ferromagnetic parts.

The inspection problem

Cracks, laps and seams on ferromagnetic parts are often invisible until the surface is magnetized and dusted with fine particles. Consistency depends on equipment, consumables and technique.

Why it matters

For forgings, castings, welds and safety-critical components, MT is often the first, fastest and most sensitive method for surface-breaking flaws.

Method comparison

Which method fits your part?

Every method has a sweet spot and a limitation. Choose based on defect, geometry, throughput and access — not on habit.

Fluorescent MT

When it fits: High-sensitivity inspection under UV light in a controlled environment.

Limitations: Requires darkening; consumable and rinse-water management.

Visible MT

When it fits: Field inspection where UV is impractical.

Limitations: Lower contrast than fluorescent.

Automated MT lines

When it fits: Production inspection of high volumes.

Limitations: Part-specific tooling and process integration.
