Surface Roughness Measurement

Quantify texture on surfaces where roughness controls fit, sealing, wear and fatigue life.

The inspection problem

Functional surfaces — sealing faces, bearing races, tool edges, sliding contacts — behave differently at different roughness levels. Measuring them consistently across parts, operators and shifts is what separates a controlled process from a variable one.

Why it matters

Uncontrolled surface roughness drives leaks, premature wear, noise and warranty returns. It is one of the most common root causes of field failures on otherwise-in-tolerance parts.

Method comparison

Which method fits your part?

Every method has a sweet spot and a limitation. Choose based on defect, geometry, throughput and access — not on habit.

Optical 3D metrology (Focus-Variation)

When it fits: Complex geometries, small features, steep flanks and reflective surfaces.

Limitations: Very rough or highly absorbent surfaces can require special settings; extremely large parts must be measured in patches.

Contact stylus profilometry

When it fits: Traceable 2D roughness on regular surfaces to established standards.

Limitations: Wear on the stylus tip, limited to line profiles, contact can damage soft surfaces.
