Weld Inspection

Match the inspection method to the weld — code, geometry, access and defect type.

The inspection problem

A weld can fail from a surface crack, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity or slag. No single method finds all of them, and code, geometry and access constrain what you can even use.

Why it matters

Weld defects in pressure equipment, structural welds and safety-critical components can lead to failure, downtime and liability.

Method comparison

Which method fits your part?

Every method has a sweet spot and a limitation. Choose based on defect, geometry, throughput and access — not on habit.

PAUT / TOFD / TFM

When it fits: Volumetric weld inspection with imaging and sizing.

Limitations: Requires operator qualification and calibration blocks.

Digital radiography

When it fits: Documentation and volumetric flaw detection.

Limitations: Radiation safety, access to both sides, orientation dependence.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

When it fits: Surface-breaking cracks on ferromagnetic materials.

Limitations: Ferromagnetic only, surface preparation needed.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)

When it fits: Surface-breaking discontinuities on non-porous materials.

Limitations: Surface only, requires clean substrate.
